The question

Streaming made almost every song available. It didn’t necessarily make listening more memorable. Screechee began somewhere else: what if discovering music felt a little more like talking to a friend in a record shop — and what if the music you loved left a record of the life around it?

The listening loop

Discover something — swipe through records and songs, hear a preview, take a left turn, or let the day’s game make the choice harder than expected. Mark what you think — rate it, react, write a review, or simply say you’ve heard it. Not every listen needs an essay; some absolutely do. Keep it somewhere — a Diary, a Listenlist, or a Crate you can return to and share. Then watch your taste take shape, without pretending an algorithm knows you better than you do.

A few details worth noticing

Music is culture, not inventory, so the interface is editorial and lived-in rather than a warehouse of album IDs. Taste belongs to the listener — ratings, reviews, and collections stay portable Screechee records instead of being owned by one streaming service. Play has a place: Mystery Groove and other listening experiments make discovery participatory. And the product meets you before login, because public browsing and previews should come before the account conversation.
